Build clearer Dutch responses for work and study. Explore practical speaking tasks, compare sample answers, and try again with one detail changed.
Your focus: key facts, a clear reason, a useful request.
Eight original tasks. Dutch sample answers.
Your B1 practice response
For work or Dutch-taught study, start with the language requirement of your school, employer, or organization. Then choose your practice focus.
| Your starting point | Programma I B1 | Programma II B2 |
|---|---|---|
| CEFR level | B1 · Intermediate Dutch | B2 · Upper-intermediate Dutch |
| Typical pathway | Work or vocational study at mbo level. | Work or study at higher professional or university level. |
| Our practice focus | Communicate the key facts, make a request, and give a clear reason. | Develop a reason, explain a consequence, and handle a competing consideration. |
| A task to start with | Explain a schedule change | Recommend a training format |
Both programs test reading, listening, writing, and speaking. The practice focus above describes our exercises, not an official scoring checklist. A B2 answer can still be simple and direct. Official program information.
Start with the same situation. Notice how both responses give the listener something useful to act on.
A direct reason, a specific alternative, and a confirmation question.
A connected explanation that also shows why the new arrangement works.
These are teaching examples, not official exam questions or scored answers. The B1/B2 labels organize practice; a longer answer is not automatically a better one.
State the conflict and explain why. After the opening time phrase, use “kan ik.” After “want,” the next clause keeps the order “ik heb.”
Kunnen we vrijdag om elf uur afspreken?
Offer a usable alternative. The specific day and time let the other person make a decision.
Laat je weten of dat lukt?
Ask for confirmation instead of assuming agreement.
Lead with the reason. The verb group “moet volgen” closes the subordinate clause; “wil ik” begins the main clause that follows.
Explain why the new arrangement still works for the shared task.
Past dat in jouw agenda?
Finish with a clear, natural confirmation question.
Both examples use a friendly tone for a colleague. For formal address, keep “u” and “uw” consistent. Formal address depends on the relationship; it is not a B2 requirement.
Easy to miss: “Vrijdag?” suggests another day, but leaves the time and confirmation unclear. Try saying your answer aloud before you read it again.
Improve it. Then change one detail.Check the information, improve one language point, and respond again when the situation changes.
Vrijdag?”
After the opening time phrase, put the finite verb before the subject.
The revision also supplies the missing time and asks for confirmation.
Original proposal: Friday at 11:00.
Your colleague cannot meet on Friday morning. Offer Friday at 14:00 instead and explain that the team leader can join then.
Kunnen we vrijdag om twee uur afspreken? Dan kan onze teamleider ook meedoen. Past dat voor jou?
Your colleague agrees to Friday, but only has fifteen minutes. Explain how you will keep the meeting short.
Your colleague will work from home on Friday. Suggest an online meeting at 11:00 and say you will send a link.
Zullen we vrijdag om elf uur online overleggen? Ik stuur je vooraf een link. Kun je dan?
Check: Did you answer every part? Is the main point clear? Does the tone fit your colleague?
Copy the task with your selected program, then paste it into the Dutch tutor. Ask for one improvement and try again.
Keep building your response skills with seven more situations. Every task includes two possible answers, an explanation, a common omission, and a fresh condition.
Explain why the report is delayed and request a specific new deadline.
Both responses connect the delay to a concrete request. The second explains how the extra time will help. After “Daarom,” notice the main-clause order: “is mijn verslag” or “vraag ik”.
Apologizing for being late without asking for a new deadline.
Give two instructions in a useful order.
“Eerst,” “daarna,” and “vervolgens” make the order clear. The second response also connects availability to the chosen time.
Mentioning the calendar without explaining that a room must be added to the appointment.
Summarize the decision, name each person's responsibility, and explain one benefit.
Zo is duidelijk wie welk deel doet.
Both responses turn a general decision into clear responsibilities. “We hebben afgesproken om…” introduces an agreement; the final sentence explains its purpose.
Saying that the work has been divided without explaining who will do each part.
Acknowledge the problem and offer the stated solution politely.
Both answers combine an apology with a concrete remedy. The final question obtains the information needed to act. Both use “u” consistently for the customer.
Giving an apology but leaving the customer unsure what will happen next.
Identify the exact instruction you need clarified.
The teacher can answer a specific question. In the second response, the opening “Voordat…” clause is followed by “wil ik” in the main clause.
Saying “Ik begrijp het niet” without identifying the part that is unclear.
Choose an option and relate your reason to the information provided.
Both explain a preference. The second uses “Hoewel…” to acknowledge an advantage of the other option before making a recommendation.
Naming a favorite option without explaining why it suits the situation.
Propose an improvement, explain its benefit, and address the practical concern.
Both responses cover the proposal and its practical limit. The second links the benefit with “zodat” and the condition with “Als”.
Explaining why a checklist is useful without addressing the time it takes.
Use the sample answers as starting points. If the time, person, or problem changes, your response should change too. Practice with your own words instead of memorizing a script.
