Build Stronger Russian Responses for TORFL
You know the words. Now give them a clear purpose. Explore original B1 and B2 speaking prompts, see how Russian responses can become more complete, and take your next idea into practice with an AI tutor.
TORFL Levels: Find Your Place from A1 to C2
TORFL is the Test of Russian as a Foreign Language. You may also see the same examination system referred to as TRKI or ТРКИ. Use the level map to orient your study; this page develops selected B1 and B2 speaking examples rather than claiming a complete course at every level.
Make the Sequence Clear
A useful response does more than name the problem. Help your listener understand what happened, what you did next, and how the situation ended.
The example below is original learning material, not an official TORFL past-paper question.
Вы опоздали на занятие из-за проблем с транспортом. Расскажите преподавателю, что произошло, что вы сделали и чем всё закончилось.
You were late for class because of a transportation problem. Tell your instructor what happened, what you did, and how the situation ended.
Вчера я опоздал на занятие, потому что автобус сломался. Я позвонил мой преподаватель и объяснил проблема.
Я позвонил моему преподавателю и объяснил проблему.
Вчера по дороге в университет сломался автобус, поэтому я опоздал на занятие. Сначала я позвонил моему преподавателю и объяснил проблему. Потом я поехал на метро. После занятия я узнал, какое домашнее задание нужно выполнить.
Что вы сделаете, если такая ситуация повторится?
What will you do if this happens again?
Я заранее предупрежу преподавателя и постараюсь найти другой маршрут.
Support Your View, Then Respond
Keep the same university context, but change the purpose. Instead of narrating one late arrival, develop a position that another person can challenge.
Your task
Нужно ли разрешать студентам иногда посещать занятия онлайн? Объясните свою позицию, приведите пример и назовите возможное ограничение.
Should students sometimes be allowed to attend classes online? Explain your position, give an example, and identify a possible limitation.
A more developed response
Я считаю, что студентам стоит разрешить иногда посещать занятия онлайн. Это особенно полезно тем, кто живёт далеко от университета или совмещает учёбу с работой. Например, если автобус сломался, студент всё равно может участвовать в обсуждении. Однако такой формат подходит не для всех занятий: лабораторные работы требуют личного присутствия. Поэтому я бы предложил гибкую систему, в которой формат зависит от целей конкретного занятия.
Но как преподавателю убедиться, что студенты действительно участвуют в занятии?
Follow the argument
A stronger response is not simply longer. Each new part gives the listener a reason to understand, question, or continue the discussion.
Small Russian Choices. Clearer Meaning.
Some changes repair a grammatical form. Others change the emphasis of an otherwise acceptable sentence. Learn to notice the difference.
A form change is not the same as added information
In a specific sentence, a case ending can repair the form. Adding an action or result solves a different problem: it completes the communicative task.
A process or a completed action?
Both sentences can work. The choice changes the relationship between actions rather than turning one sentence into a universal “wrong” answer.
A reason or a result?
The basic situation can stay the same while the connector changes how you guide the listener through it.
Choose Your Next TORFL Speaking Topic
Read the situation, answer in your own words, and then try the follow-up. The level labels describe the intended practice focus; these are not official past-paper questions.
Explain a transportation problem
Ask to keep a library book longer
Change a group meeting
Discuss flexible attendance
Decide how a university should use its budget
Compare group and individual work
Turn a Spoken Request into a Clear Written Message
A spoken explanation and a written request can share the same purpose, but a message also needs a clear opening, a specific request, and an appropriate ending.

Здравствуйте!
К сожалению, завтра я не смогу прийти на консультацию, потому что в это время буду на работе. Можно ли перенести нашу встречу на пятницу? Мне удобно после двух часов дня. Если это время вам не подходит, пожалуйста, предложите другой вариант.
Спасибо за понимание.

Five TORFL Subtests. A Focused Role for This Page.
TORFL includes vocabulary and grammar, reading, listening, writing, and speaking. A speaking-focused routine should sit alongside preparation for the other subtests, not replace it.
For current test-center information and the five-subtest overview, consult the testing organization you plan to use. Reference: SPbPU Testing Center overview.
Give One Russian Answer Another Try
Choose one prompt and answer before reading the model. Then review one useful change and try the same communicative goal again without copying the model sentence by sentence.
State the task
What were you trying to explain, request, compare, or defend? Keep the goal visible before you worry about every ending.
Change one useful thing
Add a missing detail, repair one form, or make the relationship between two actions clearer. Keep grammar and information changes separate.
Answer the follow-up
Do not stop after the opening response. Practice the next question so that the conversation can continue beyond a memorized first answer.
Know What This Page Does—and What It Does Not.
Use the answers here to choose a practice path without confusing independent learning materials with official exam registration, results, or certification.
Open the Russian tutorYes. TORFL is the English abbreviation commonly used for the Test of Russian as a Foreign Language; TRKI is a Latin-letter rendering of the Russian abbreviation ТРКИ. Check your target level and the testing organization’s current instructions rather than treating the abbreviations as separate preparation paths.
Start with the B1-focused examples when you want to organize a short narrative or make a request more clearly. Choose the B2-focused examples when you want to develop a position, compare alternatives, and respond to a challenge. This is a practice starting point, not a formal placement result.
No. The prompts, sample responses, and explanations on this page are original learning materials. Use them for skills practice alongside official preparation materials for your chosen level.
No. This page focuses on selected speaking tasks and a short writing example. It does not reproduce the complete five-subtest exam or official testing conditions.
You can use the written-request example as a short self-study exercise for purpose, clarity, and message structure. It is not a complete writing paper or an official writing assessment.
Choose the task that is difficult for you rather than assuming one level fits every skill. Try explaining an unfamiliar situation, making a formal request, or writing a short message, then use the difficulty you notice to guide your next practice session.
